2006 – 2007  Cub Scout Roundtable Monthly Themes

The Cub Scout Roundtable monthly theme is one month in advance of the themes presented in the Cub Scout Program Helps.  As always, all adults, leaders and youth are welcome at the Cub Scout Roundtable.

Too much fun is never enough!

September (October) – Cub Scout Shipbuilders

Ahoy!  This is the month for sailing all kinds of ships and setting sail into the sea of Cub Scouting.  Besides learning how to tie knots, we will set sail on adventurous journeys and take a trip down the raingutter at the boy-powered raingutter regatta.

October (November) – Cubs in Shining Armor

Hear ye!  Hear ye!  The Royal Court of the Order of Hou Koda is now in session.  This month is a time for honor, sportsmanship, fitness, and, of course, when work is done, merriment at the Royal Tournament!  The highlight this month will be the knighting of our new knights.  The king will give a special charge to his loyal subjects.  There is much to do, much to learn, in the kingdom of Cub Scouts.

November (December) – Cub Scout Stars

See the lights in the night sky and marvel.  Cub Scouts this month enjoy looking upward to the stars.  They can spot the animals, people, and imaginary creatures of the constellations, and the powerful light cast off by objects far, far away.  This month’s theme brings the stars closer to home with activities and fun!

 December (January) – Poles Apart

Travel north or travel south – there you will find ice and snow.  Where are you?  The North or South Pole!  Learn about the explorers who have braved these cold climates.  Can you guess which animals make their homes in these frozen lands?  Practice with a map and compass and learn about magnets and polarity.  This is a great time to earn the Map and Compass belt loop and pin.

January (February) – Aloha, Cub Scouts!

Aloha!  This word has many meanings: love, affection, kindness, hello, and good-bye are just a few.  Right now, hello and welcome to our luau!  Hawaii is a state of many islands where the weather is warm and volcanos rise above beautiful beaches.  How exciting to be exploring our 50th state, its people and culture.  Now, let’s capture that “Aloha Spirit”!

February (March) – Baloo Skies

Rain, rain, go away – we’re looking for Baloo skies!  Cub Scouts will learn how weather affects our daily lives.  Visit a weather station or watch the weather forecast on television or the Internet.  Find out how meteorologists predict the weather and how we can rely on Mother Nature’s simple signs of impending weather.  Make a rain gauge or weather vane, watch the clouds, and become an amateur meteorologist.  Earn the Weather belt loop and pin.  At your Den or Pack meetings, a science teacher, weather forecaster, or meteorologist could be special guests.

 March (April) – Cub Café

Refreshments will be served!  This month we take notice that food is part of life.  Wherever we go or whatever we celebrate, food is involved.  In today’s world it is important for us to teach our boys how to eat a healthy diet and why we need to eat healthfully.  There are many ways to do this, and we will explore alternative snacks and desserts along with recipes for low-fat and sugar-free cooking.  We adults, too, need to set an example.

April (May) – Cub and Bugs Galore

Bugs and boys!  They go together like peanut butter and jelly.  All boys love creepy, crawly, slimy bugs and things that crawl, jump, and slither.  This month is the perfect opportunity to satisfy the natural curiosity of the boys, and teach them about our multi-legged, crawling friends.  Where do bugs go in the winter?  Where does honey come from?  The coming warm weather and new growth of spring offer many occasions to teach your Cub Scouts about our exciting bug friends.

May (June) – Wheel into Summer

What would we do if the wheel had never been invented?  We wouldn’t have bicycles, skateboards, scooters, roller skates, and rollerblades for fun and exercise.  Since we have the wheel, it’s time to go outside and have a wheely great time.  This month your Den or Pack can host a bicycle rodeo and fulfill requirements for the Bicycling belt loop and pin.  There is also a Roller Skating belt loop and pin for additional Den and Pack activities.  There’s lots of outdoor fun this month!

June (July) – The Rockets’ Red Glare

July is a month for outdoor fun, but also a time for celebrating the freedom we all enjoy.  This month the boys will learn flag etiquette and the responsibilities of good citizenship.  Patriotic games and crafts hold lots of fun in store for the boys this month.
